Registering for the Uniform Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination™ (UMPJE™) involves multiple steps, all managed through the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP®). Each step has its own fees, deadlines, and requirements that must be completed in order.
Missing a step or letting your eligibility period lapse means forfeiting fees and starting over. Before you apply, confirm that your target jurisdiction has adopted the UMPJE, that you meet the education requirements, and that you understand every cost involved. This guide walks you through it.
UMPJE Quick Facts
UMPJE™ Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the UMPJE, you must have graduated from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)-accredited, school of pharmacy in the United States or its territories, or hold Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee™ (FPGEC®) certification from the NABP. You must also be seeking licensure in a jurisdiction that has adopted the UMPJE. If you meet both conditions, you are ready to apply.
Eligibility
The following candidates are not eligible to apply:
- Graduates of ACPE-accredited post-baccalaureate pharmacy programs
- Graduates of pharmacy programs outside the United States that hold ACPE international accreditation status (Precertification, Provisional Certification, Certification, International-Accreditation, International Pre-Accreditation, or Provisional International-Accreditation)
If either applies to you, contact your state board of pharmacy for guidance on your licensure pathway.
Jurisdiction
The UMPJE is only available in jurisdictions that have formally adopted it. If your target state uses the traditional state-specific Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE®), you will take the MPJE instead. As the participating list of states is updated by the NABP on an ongoing basis, always confirm the current requirements directly with your state board of pharmacy or at nabp.pharmacy before applying.
Eligibility Period
Once the NABP grants eligibility, your eligibility period is typically valid for 1 year. The NABP does not have the authority to extend eligibility periods. If your eligibility expires before you purchase and schedule the exam, you forfeit all fees paid and must restart the entire application process. The NABP caps the attempt limit to 5, with a mandatory 30-day waiting period before reapplying.
You cannot purchase the exam if 10 or fewer business days remain in your eligibility period. Do not wait to purchase once eligibility is granted.
First-Time vs. Retake Applicants
If you have never taken both the UMPJE and the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX), submit your official pharmacy school transcripts with your degree conferral data to the NABP. Check with the NABP and your school for transcript submission procedures before applying.
How to Register for the UMPJE: Step by Step
Registration for the UMPJE involves the following steps managed through NABP and Pearson VUE. Eligibility must be granted before you can purchase the exam, and you cannot schedule your appointment without first receiving your Authorization to Test (ATT).
UMPJE Registration Process
1. Confirm Your Eligibility and Jurisdiction
Before applying, confirm that your target jurisdiction has adopted the UMPJE and that you meet the education requirements outlined above. Read the official NABP Candidate Application Bulletin in full before starting your application. Note that the requirements vary by jurisdiction, and check with your state board of pharmacy for any jurisdiction-specific rules.
2. Apply for Eligibility and Pay the Application Fee
Log in to your NABP e-Profile, or create one if you do not already have one, and select the primary jurisdiction where you are seeking licensure and submit your UMPJE eligibility application (and pay the nonrefundable application fee). Ensure that the name in your e-Profile exactly matches the name on the government-issued ID you will present at the testing center, as discrepancies can prevent you from sitting for the exam.
3. Purchase the Exam and Receive Your ATT
Once the NABP grants eligibility, a purchase link will appear in your NABP e-Profile for the exam fee, which can be paid via credit/debit card or ACH direct debit. After payment is processed, the NABP will send your Authorization to Test (ATT) by email. However, keep checking your profile for the ATT as the email notification can sometimes be delayed or land in your spam folder.
Your ATT is valid for 1 testing session only. Verify that the name on your ATT exactly matches your government-issued ID before proceeding to schedule.
You may also purchase score transfers during this step if you plan to use your UMPJE result in additional jurisdictions. Each score transfer must be purchased within 89 days for each jurisdiction of your exam date. Check the UMPJE Score Transfers section on the scoring page for more details.
The NABP strongly recommends purchasing the exam as soon as the eligibility is granted. If your eligibility expires before your purchase, you will forfeit all fees paid and must reapply.
4. Schedule Your UMPJE at a Pearson VUE Professional Center
Use your ATT to schedule your testing appointment at a Pearson VUE Professional Center. The UMPJE is administered at Pearson centers across all 50 states, U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia. You can schedule online at pearsonvue.com or by phone through Pearson customer service.
If you have approved Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accommodations through the NABP, you must schedule your appointment by phone. You will receive a confirmation email from Pearson with your testing location, directions, and rescheduling/cancellation policies.

Armed Forces Discount
The NABP offers a fee discount for eligible U.S. Armed Forces members and their spouses. The discount applies to the initial application and exam fees only and must be requested through your NABP e-Profile before you apply.
Eligible personnel and their respective discounts:
- Active members, reservists, and honorably discharged veterans: 100% discount on the initial application and exam fees for 1 UMPJE purchase
- Spouses of eligible military personnel: 50% discount on all initial application and exam fees
Eligible branches include the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. National Guard, and U.S. Space Force. Officers in the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service must be actively deployed outside the United States to qualify.
Submit your U.S. Armed Forces documentation before applying, as the discount cannot be applied retroactively. Note that the Armed Forces discount does not apply to resit fees, rescheduling fees, score transfer fees, or the eligibility service processing fee.
UMPJE Retakes and the 5-Attempt Limit
If you fail the UMPJE and wish to retake it, you must begin the eligibility application process again through your NABP e-Profile, including paying the exam fee. The NABP will reconfirm eligibility for each attempt (5 maximum), and you will not receive a new ATT until the mandatory 30-day waiting period has ended.
If your situation qualifies, you may apply for an emergency resit through your NABP e-Profile. An approved emergency resit reduces the cost of the retake fee. If your request is not approved, the standard exam fee applies.
If you are approaching your 5-attempt limit, contact your state board of pharmacy before reapplying. Some jurisdictions allow exceptions, but that determination is made by the board, not the NABP.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How long does UMPJE eligibility last?
Eligibility is typically valid for 1 year from the date of your initial application. The NABP cannot extend eligibility periods. If your eligibility expires before you schedule or take the exam, all fees are forfeited, and you must restart the application process, including paying both the application fee and the exam fee again.
Can I switch from MPJE to UMPJE after I have already applied?
Yes, you can switch if your state has formally replaced the MPJE with the UMPJE. In adopting jurisdictions, the UMPJE is not an alternative and is the required jurisprudence exam. Candidates who applied for the MPJE before their state transitions will need to switch. If that applies, contact the NABP Exam Services at ExamServices@nabp.pharmacy to close your MPJE application. The NABP will issue a full refund of both the MPJE application and exam fees. You then apply for UMPJE eligibility separately as a new application. See the participating jurisdictions to confirm which exam your state currently requires.
What happens if I miss my scheduled UMPJE exam appointment?
If you miss your scheduled appointment, contact Pearson VUE customer service promptly. Cancellations made with sufficient advance notice generally allow rescheduling, while no-shows result in the exam fee being forfeited and require a full reapplication, including paying all fees again.
Can I apply for UMPJE eligibility in multiple states at the same time?
You select 1 primary jurisdiction when applying for UMPJE eligibility. If you want your result sent to additional participating jurisdictions, you can purchase score transfers for each jurisdiction at the time of exam purchase or up to 89 days after your exam date. Contact the boards of pharmacy in all jurisdictions you are considering to confirm their specific requirements before applying.
Do ADA accommodations apply to the UMPJE?
Yes. The NABP evaluates all ADA accommodation requests for the UMPJE. Candidates with approved accommodations must schedule their exam appointment by phone through Pearson VUE customer service. Full instructions for requesting ADA accommodations are available in the official NABP Candidate Application Bulletin at read.nxtbook.com/nabp/bulletin.
