MPJE® Registration, Cost, and Eligibility

Most state boards of pharmacy in the United States (47 states and the District of Columbia) require pharmacists to pass the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination® (MPJE®) and the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination® (NAPLEX®) for licensure. The MPJE, developed by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy® (NABP®), is designed to assess a student's understanding of laws and regulations relating to the practice of pharmacy in a particular state or jurisdiction. The MPJE is a 2.5-hour, 120-question computer-based exam that uses adaptive technology to deliver selected-response questions. The use of adaptive technology means that the questions are delivered based on your performance on previous questions.

This article contains all the information on MPJE eligibility, cost, and registration that you will need in order to become a licensed pharmacist in the United States.

MPJE Eligibility

Candidates must fulfill all application requirements outlined by their state board of pharmacy in order to be eligible to sit for the MPJE. For new graduates, these requirements vary by state and jurisdiction and may include graduation from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy, completion of intern hours, creating an electronic application account, or other requirements (e.g., receipt of school transcripts, fingerprinting). Candidates should refer to the individual state board of pharmacy websites for specific requirements and details.

Candidates who have already obtained a pharmacist license in one state may apply for a license in a different state through a process called reciprocity, but these individuals are often still required to take the MPJE for the new state. Licensing by reciprocity has its own set of requirements and application process that must be completed.

Once you have completed the required application, submitted the requested materials, and followed all instructions, the state board will review your application. If all materials have been satisfactorily completed, the state board will issue you an Authorization to Test (ATT), which allows you to schedule your exam.

Can international students take the MPJE?

Yes. However, international candidates need to obtain Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee® (FPGEC®) certification before applying to take pharmacist licensure exams (e.g., NAPLEX, MPJE) in a jurisdiction of the United States.

The FPGEC certification evaluates the candidate’s pharmacy education in comparison to US colleges of pharmacy and includes the following:

  1. A review of your education and licensure/registration
  2. A passing score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT)
  3. A passing score on the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination® (FPGEE®)

MPJE Registration

Now that you have learned about the MPJE eligibility requirements, it is time to explore the details of the MPJE registration process. This section answers all of your questions about the MPJE registration process, score transfer, eligibility to test, and what you should do if you want to cancel your registration.

When can I apply for the MPJE?

You may apply for the MPJE exam prior to graduating. However, you will not be able to schedule your exam until you have completed all graduation requirements and received confirmation from your state board of pharmacy that you are eligible to take the test. To register for the exam, you must submit an official transcript from your school that includes your degree conferral date.

Candidates who are already licensed pharmacists in one state may apply for licensure in other states after meeting the requirements for reciprocity outlined by the new state’s board of pharmacy. Once the state board of pharmacy confirms eligibility, the candidate may sit for the MPJE.

How to register for the MPJE

The Candidate Application Bulletin is a comprehensive guide to applying and registering for the MPJE. Before starting the registration process, read the entire bulletin to determine the licensure requirements. A summary of the process is outlined below:

  1. Obtain a NABP e-Profile

If you do not already have an NABP e-Profile, follow the instructions on NABP’s website to create one. Verify that your name in your e-Profile exactly matches the name on the primary and secondary IDs that you will use to be admitted to the testing center. If applicable, request an armed forces discount through your NABP e-Profile prior to applying for the exam.

  2. Register for the exam
    • You must register to take the MPJE on the NABP website by applying in the “Exam Services” section of your NABP e-Profile.
    • You have the option to apply for exams in multiple jurisdictions.
    • As part of your registration, you must pay the application fee for each jurisdiction.
    • If applicable, request Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accommodations.
  3. Submit your transcripts (for new licensees) and receive your authorization to test

If you graduated in or after 2020 and are obtaining your first license, you must request that your college of pharmacy send your official transcript to NABP before you can register for the exam and receive an Authorization to Test (ATT). Pharmacy schools may have a processing fee to send your official transcript to third-party testing sites.

In addition, specific state boards of pharmacy may require an official transcript as part of your licensure application. Check with the state board of pharmacy where you intend to get licensed to determine if you also need to have an official transcript sent directly to the state board.

Your ATT will be issued via email by Pearson VUE. It is valid for one testing session and has an expiration date. If you do not receive the ATT, check your spam folder, or contact Pearson VUE customer service.

  4. Purchase your exam

Your MPJE eligibility is granted once you receive your ATT and the exam payment link appears in your e-Profile. As soon as you become eligible, NABP strongly recommends you purchase your exam. You may also purchase a score transfer at this time.

  5. Schedule your test date and location

After purchasing the exam, you can schedule your appointment with Pearson VUE. If you are a first-time test-taker, you must create a Pearson VUE online account to schedule your appointment. This step requires you to enter the NABP ID number you received in your ATT letter. Since testing sites and locations fill up rapidly, we recommend scheduling your exam promptly! Check with Pearson VUE to learn more about scheduling your exam.

  6. Study for the MPJE

You will need to be familiar with laws that govern pharmacy practice at both the federal and state levels. Specifically, you will need to review the laws and regulations of the state or jurisdiction for which you are seeking licensure.

  7. Take the exam!

Now that you have learned all the above steps in the MPJE registration process, it is time to prepare to take the exam. Refer to our extensive MPJE study guide for more information on what to study and how to study for the exam.
